ChatGPT alternative for enterprises: Leftshift One, a European leader in artificial intelligence (AI), is launching a privacy-compliant and traceable AI service tailored for businesses, similar to the well-known US chatbot. To fuel this expansion, growth capital is being invested: alongside existing investors Hermann Hauser and eQventure, the Styrian Business Promotion Agency (SFG) is also joining with venture capital.

GRAZ. Whether as a candidate for legal state exams, a speechwriter for politicians, or a source of ideas for creatives, the text-based bot from US tech company OpenAI impresses with its accuracy in various roles. The AI language model has sparked a hype around artificial intelligence and is the fastest-growing internet application of the past 20 years, with over 100 million users in just two months. However, the Graz-based scale-up Leftshift One, working with AI models since 2017, criticizes the lack of control, traceability, data protection, and ethical considerations in ChatGPT. “At the same time, the tool has triggered unprecedented demand for AI, demonstrating the diverse applications and extensive functions of artificial intelligence,” explains Leftshift One CEO Patrick Ratheiser.
Lean technological solution
Leftshift One is also benefiting from the AI boom with a business solution tailored for the European market. The company is launching an AI service designed for enterprise-specific use cases, with key differences from ChatGPT: a focus on data privacy, traceability, and transparent results, including source references. Their leaner technological approach uses smaller transformer models (7-20 billion parameters) with fine-tuning for specific applications, making responses more reliable and understandable. In contrast, GPT-3, which powers ChatGPT, uses 175 billion parameters.

Technologically, Leftshift One clearly sets itself apart: “Our smaller model is not only more efficient, resource-saving, and easier to adapt, but it can also be operated within a company’s internal data center without sharing sensitive company information,” explains the AI expert. “Our business customers have full control over their own data at all times.” The knowledge base must be provided by the company in the form of documents, files, etc. Leftshift One’s service can classify emails, files, documents, and articles or respond to customer inquiries across industries.

Leftshift One identifies potential for artificial intelligence, particularly in the public sector and regional private industry. Support for this comes from the Styrian Economic Development Agency (SFG): the subsidiary of the State of Styria is participating in the company through venture capital. “Artificial intelligence has the potential to positively change our lives and society. But this can only happen if it is developed and used ethically and responsibly. Together with Leftshift One, we want to set an example that the development and use of AI align with our values and beliefs. We are confident that Styria, thanks to its innovative strength and forward-looking companies like Leftshift One, will take a leading role in the field of trustworthy AI,” explains Barbara Eibinger-Miedl, the Styrian Minister for Economic Affairs. Conversely, the SFG’s involvement “will further enhance the trustworthiness of Leftshift One’s AI services,” says CEO Ratheiser.

For Christoph Ludwig, Managing Director of the Styrian Economic Development Agency (SFG), it is clear: “Styria is an innovative and forward-looking business location that has produced many high-caliber innovative companies. Artificial intelligence is a key technology for the future competitiveness and sustainability of our economy. Therefore, we are committed to promoting the development and application of AI in Styria, particularly through the support of technology leaders like Leftshift One, who operate in this field.” The existing investors eQventure and ARM founder Hermann Hauser, who have been involved with Leftshift One since 2019, are also participating in the current financing round. In total, a high six-figure amount will be invested in the accelerated growth of the company.
